Research Experience

Goals in Decisions from Experience (University of Warwick)

May 2020 – present

PhD research project investigating the influence of explicit, specific goals on exploration behaviour and decision strategies in decisions from experience. I have data collection and analysis for my first experiment, which used a standard multi-armed bandit task with stationary reward distributions. I am currently in the process of preparing experiments 2 and 3 for data collection, with a view to improving the goal thresholds and expanding the design to a restless bandit task. I also hope to apply modelling analysis to these data to better explore these behaviours.

Dimensionality in Human Reasoning (University of Warwick)

Nov 2019 – present

PhD research project applying signed-difference analysis to a novel experimental dataset to test the limits of single-process models of deductive and inductive reasoning. This is a 2x2x2 mixed-design, testing whether a double-dissociation occurs between inductive and deductive instructions when validity and affirmation/denial are contrasted. This would give the sign- vector (+ – – +), which necessitates a dual-process model. I have conducted three experiments which found no significant evidence to discount a single-process model. I am currently working on preparing revisions before resubmitting this work for publication in Thinking and Reasoning.

Implicit Gender-Associations and Language-Cued Frame- Shifting in French-English Bilinguals (King’s College London)

Sep 2018– April 2019

Final Year Undergraduate research project assessing the effect of target language on implicit gender associations in French-English Bilinguals. This was a 2x2 between-subjects IAT study, testing whether there are significant differences in the implicit association between gender and honesty and gender and intelligence between subjects assessed through English and those assessed through French. I was involved in all aspects of the study, including literature review, study and materials design, online data collection, and data coding and analysis. I found no conclusive evidence for an effect of language on either of the facets tested.

Visual Environmental Factors in the Experience of Boredom – VR Pilot Study

Jun – Aug 2018

Part-Time voluntary research project. This study is part of a larger project assessing the Natural-Urban effect on experienced boredom, my project expanded this research for the first time into Virtual Reality to examine 3 key visual factors as potential causes of this effect in a 3x2 mixed design (subjects are randomly assigned to explore three of the 6 environments, all-natural, all-urban, or a mix of the two). I joined the project after the design stage but was involved in all data collection and analysis for inclusion in a manuscript to be submitted for publication sometime in the next year.

Collective Boredom and Outgroup Derogation (King’s College London)

Jun – Jul 2018

Full-time paid research assistant position. This study consisted of three experiments designed to induce a simulated collective experience of boredom and assess its impact on outgroup hostility and derogation. I was involved with all aspects of the project from materials design to data analysis and I presented the findings to the KCL EASY lab-group. We found no conclusive evidence for an effect of collective experience of boredom beyond the effect of personal boredom.
